Chapter 19 - Assessment and Feedback
Redesigning assessment for a world where AI is always available
The assumption that broke
Traditional assessment assumed that if a student submitted a paper, the student wrote every word. AI broke that assumption permanently. The fix is not banning AI or trusting blindly - it is assessing the process, not just the product.
| Scaffolding (appropriate) | Replacement (inappropriate) |
| Generating ideas to choose from | Generating the whole essay |
| Checking grammar to understand an error | Letting AI silently fix every error with no explanation |
| Asking for feedback the student then acts on | Submitting AI feedback as if it were the student's own revision |
AI-resilient does not mean AI-proof or distrustful. Design tasks where the interesting cognitive work - a personal example, a defence in conference, a response to a specific class discussion - cannot be outsourced even when AI assistance is permitted.

Activity 19.A - Spectrum Sort. Groups sort ten described AI-use scenarios along the appropriate-to-inappropriate spectrum, justifying each placement.

Activity 19.B - Process Portfolio Spot-Check. Once per unit, students submit their AI Collaboration Log alongside their final draft; the teacher spot-checks one entry per student for genuine reflection rather than rote completion.
