The gap this chapter addresses
Opinion essays bridge personal and analytical writing. At B1 they don't yet require counterargument - that arrives in Chapter 12 - but they do require a thesis that genuinely commits to a position.
A weak thesis produces a weak essay regardless of how well the body paragraphs are written - spend disproportionate time on this one sentence.
Additional activities for Chapter 17
Activity A15-20 min
Thesis Upgrade. Students take a flat opinion statement ('I think social media is bad') and rebuild it with the three-part structure: clear position, specific scope, optional qualifier.
Activity B15-20 min
Beyond 'I Think'. Using the graduated opinion-language table, students rewrite five sentences that begin with 'I think,' each time selecting a phrase matched to a different formality level.
